On Saturday, March 24, students, alumni, faculty and members of the community gathered in Benson University Center for a spectacular celebration of the art of writing. The event was the first ever Words Awake!, a conference dedicated entirely to writers and the written word.

While numerous novelists, journalists, screenwriters, poets and even hip-hop artists came to Wake Forest to join in on the celebration and tell their stories, they all had one aspect in common: each writer invited back to the conference to speak was once a student at Wake Forest.

?It is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to have a group of such accomplished writers together in the same place who have the common thread of graduating from Wake Forest,? senior Hannah Kay Hunt said of the event.

The event kicked off on March 23 in the Porter B. Byrum Welcome Center with a documentary show by alum Tom Hayes (?79) on his father, Harold Hayes (?48), an influential editor of Esquire?magazine and another Wake Forest alumni.

Afterward, Provost Ed Wilson (?43) gave a speech on the history of writers from the university.

Earlier in the day, the writers visited 10 different schools in the Winston-Salem community to hold workshops, give readings and immerse local students in the world of writing as a career.

But the real conference didn?t start until March 24. Benson University Center was filled by 8:30 a.m. with people of all ages who were interested in writing and reading.

Alumni gathered in groups to talk and reminisce about days spent at Wake, curious students walked around, waiting for the panels to begin and young children accompanied their parents to hear a favorite author speak. The panels, which were given in groups of four throughout the day, ranged in topic from ?Writing for Children/the Young Adult Mind? and ?Writing Screenplay? to ?Writing Washington News? and ?Writing Sports.?

The panels focused on letting the writers explain their journey to and the experience of writing in the field that they were currently employed, and then the panel was opened up to questions from the audience. Interspersed between the panels were readings of new novels, poetry or other works given by published authors.

The largest issue addressed was, inevitably, the future of writing, especially in journalism, and if newspapers and magazines will be able to survive the ?digital age.? Some writers, such as Shane Harris (?98), were adamant that print and journalism as a whole was alive and well, and that the written word remained important. ?I have great hope for the written word,? Harris said. ?I don?t think print is dying, at all.?

Yet other panelists, such as Linda Brinson (?69), saw the future of print and journalism not in newspapers or even websites, but in iPad apps for quick news and magazines sent directly to the inbox of a subscriber.

Helen Anders (?74), who is currently a freelance humor columnist, said that an aspiring writer should ?Find a niche, something you are good at.? She predicted that journalism would soon become a specialists? game.

Another topic of debate, which especially came up in creative writing panels, was the issue of self-publishing, a subject which plagues writers of all ages, aspiring or not. Self-publication for many authors seems to be more of a viable choice in today?s world. Trice Hickman (MALS ?98), for example, made a career for herself through self-publishing and now has a contract with a major book publisher.

On the other hand, though, many authors insisted that the greatest help a writer could have was an editor who truly believed in them and could help their craft immensely.

Saturday concluded with a banquet, given in honor of the inductees to the brand new Writers Hall of Fame, which included Hayes, Wilson, Bynum Shaw, Maya Angelou and 11 others. The Hall of Fame is now on display outside of the writing center in Z. Smith Reynolds library.

The event ended on March 25 with a small meet-and-greet for writers and students; the students were given a chance to interact with and ask advice from the attending writers.

When asked what piece of advice a writer could give to a student looking to make a career of writing, each responded with something different.

?The best training for a job in journalism is to saddle up next to someone who will mentor you,? Harris said. ?If you find that person, they will teach you what you need to know.?

Jane Bianchi (?05), the current editor of Daily Health News, was adamant in her advice. ?Internships really matter more than anything.? She went on to say that the job experience and the networking opportunities given by an internship, even unpaid, could lead to a job further down the line which could define one?s career.

Some authors, though, were persistent that a dream and hard work could turn an aspiring author into a published one.

?Whether you want to be an author, a journalist or whatever, have a plan,? Trice Hickman said. ?Even if the plan doesn?t pan out, you?ll know where you want to go and different ways to get there.?

Here?s how the text analytics technology works: Claims adjusters write long reports when they investigate claims, telling the story of the incident from beginning to end. Some of these reports can amount to thousands of words. Hidden in the text are clues that the adjuster may not notice or facts that he or she might forget. But the computing system, based on rules, can spot evidence of possible fraud. For example, if someone claims that their car caught fire but the narrative indicates that they took everything of value out?such as golf clubs?that might indicate they torched it. Also, people who commit fraud tend to change their story over time. The system can spot that kind of discrepancy.

Infinity has just begun using text analytics on a limited basis, but Dibble hopes to have it rolled out in a big way this year. ?This is really big data being put to work,? he says.

UN-led Meeting Agrees on Priority Actions for Managing E-Waste in Africa / Pan-African Forum on E-Waste Underlines Green Economy Opportunities in E-Waste Sector

NAIROBI, Kenya, March 16, 2012/African Press Organization (APO)/ ? Priority actions for reducing the environmental and health impacts of growing levels of electrical and electronic waste (e-waste), alongside promoting the sector?s potential for green jobs and economic development, were today agreed by representatives from 18 African states, the United Nations, non-governmental organizations, the private sector and academia.

The actions were agreed on the final day of the Pan-African Forum on E-Waste, which was held at the Nairobi headquarters of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

Organized by the Secretariat of the Basel Convention and UNEP, with support from the Government of Kenya, and private sector companies including Dell, HP, Nokia and Philips, the forum was the first event of its kind on the continent. It focused on long-term solutions to the rising levels of obsolete mobile phones, refrigerators, televisions and other e-products in Africa.

Increasing domestic consumption of electronic products, coupled with the ongoing import of waste electronics into Africa from other regions, means that the continent could generate a higher volume of e-waste than Europe by 2017.

The Pan-African Forum on E-Waste in Nairobi adopted a ?Call to Action?, which outlines 8 priority areas to improve the environmentally-sound management of e-waste in Africa.

These include:

?? ? ? ? Implementation and enforcement by African states of the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal and the Bamako Convention, which bans the import of hazardous wastes into Africa

?? ? ? ? Development of national systems to improve the collection, recycling, transport, storage and disposal of e-waste

?? ? ? ? National institutions to co-operate with multiple stakeholders (UN, NGOs, private sector and others) in producing e-waste assessments

?? ? ? ? Recognition that the safe and sustainable recycling of e-waste provides an opportunity for green jobs and poverty reduction

?? ? ? ? Awareness raising activities on environmental and health hazards linked to the unsound management of e-waste

?Managing e-waste, and other kinds of waste, is essential for the transition to a low-carbon, resource-efficient Green Economy?, said UN Under-Secretary-General and UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner.

?Sustainable management of e-waste can combat poverty and generate green jobs through recycling, collection and processing of e-waste ? and safeguard the environment and human health from the hazards posed by rising levels of waste electronics. With just over three months until the Rio+20 conference in Brazil, this event has underlined how smart public policies, creative financial incentives and technology transfer can turn e-waste from a challenge into an important resource for sustainable development,? added Mr. Steiner.

He highlighted that global recycling rates of some e-waste metals?known as rare earth metals?can be as low as one per cent despite these metals being crucial for components in hybrid electric car batteries to the magnets in wind turbines.

?The future of the clean tech, high-tech products and the transition to a Green Economy may in part depend on boosting the recycling of e-waste in order to assure a steady and streamlined supply of these specialty metals for these 21st century industries,? added Mr Steiner.

As well as serving as a valuable source of secondary raw materials, the recovery and recycling of e-waste can reduce pressure on scarce natural resources and contribute to emissions reductions.

?One tonne of obsolete mobile phones contains more gold than one tonne of ore and the picture is similar for other precious substances?, said Katharina Kummer-Peiry, Executive Secretary of the Basel Convention.

?If you consider the value of these materials, then this represents an important economic opportunity. There are recyclers and other industrial sectors who are interested in taking advantage of such opportunities, which can in turn create green jobs and support sustainable development.?

Delegates at the Pan-African E-waste Forum underlined the importance of improved access to Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in Africa towards achieving the United Nations Millennium Development Goals.

But the disposal of obsolete electronic equipment can pose significant environmental and health risks. E-waste can contain hazardous substances, including heavy metals such as mercury and lead, and endocrine disrupting substances such as brominated flame retardants.

Much of the recycling of e-waste that takes place in Africa today occurs on an informal basis ? often on uncontrolled dumpsites or landfills. Hazardous substances can be released during these dismantling and disposal operations. Open burning of cables, for example, is a major source of dioxin emissions; a persistent organic pollutant that travels over long-distances and can end up in food chain.

Participants at the Pan-African E-Waste Forum underlined the fact that recycling and recovery activities need to move from the unregulated, informal sector, where health and environmental risks are high, to a more regulated system using international recycling standards.

?Africa?s environmental challenges are growing by the day. This includes the exponential growth of electronic waste,? said Ali D. Mohamed, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment and Mineral Resources of Kenya.

?It is now the time for Africa to take action on addressing health and environmental problems as a result of current recycling practices, while creating jobs and business opportunities and alleviating poverty. We want to achieve this through an enforceable legislative framework,? added Mr. Mohamed.

As part of the ?Call to Action?, manufacturers, importers, re-sellers and other handlers of electrical and electronic products should be required to organize the collection, recycling and recovery of e-waste. The forum agreed that Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) should be a key component of the environmentally sound management of e-waste.

Some areas of Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana were devastated by recent tornadoes. To aid the relief effort, Cincinnati Metro parked a bus in front of the Hyde Park Kroger On Saturday March 10. They asked grocery shoppers to "Stuff the Bus" with non perishable food, personal care items and cleaning supplies.

Metro Marketing Director, Dave Etienne, explained the collection effort would be a one day event. If anyone wanted to contribute after that, they could make cash donations at their local Kroger store or visit the following websites:
