Special Guest Speaker Visits ECSF's Business ... - EC English

Oracle Vice President Jeffrey Pease Gives Guest Lecture to Students

???? On October 4, Oracle Vice President Jeffrey Pease took time out from the company?s annual Oracle OpenWorld conference to speak to EC San Francisco?s Business Communications class on, ?What I?ve Learned About Leadership (So Far).? Interest in the session led to it being joined by another class.

???? Pease gave students an overview of the software industry and emphasized the career value of communications and interpersonal skills. ?Become a communications expert,? Pease advised. As you advance in your career, your specific hard skills become less important and your soft skills such as communication and the ability to work in a team become much more important. So those of you in this class are working on the right thing.?

???? Pease shared ?Things I Knew About Leadership That Were Wrong,? and offered job-seeking and work advice for aspiring leaders. He also offered encouragement students with unconventional educational or career backgrounds, sharing his own history as high school dropout prior to university and a high-tech career.

???? Students were full of curiosity and questions, from general ones about industries and business functions to requests for specific advice on changing careers. Twenty minutes of questions during the class bled over into a small line and another twenty minutes of individual Q&A after the session ended.

???? With student interest high, Cyndi Cadua, the Business Communications teacher, plans to follow up this session by bringing other businesspeople and entrepreneurs as guest speakers.

RG3, Luck & Co. may force teams, pundits to re-think expectations for new signal callers

Robert Griffin III has the Redskins off to a 3-3 start, but that doesn't begin to descibe his NFL impact, writes Scott Kascmar.

ANALYSIS

The 2012 NFL season will be remembered for many things, but one of the most interesting stories is the progression of the rookie quarterbacks.

This could be the year the book was rewritten on rookie expectations. The fearless five starters are still healthy and holding onto their jobs as we head into Week 7, an encouraging sign.

There has never been a season in the modern era (since 1950) where five rookie quarterbacks started in Week 1, but that was the case with Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III, Ryan Tannehill, Brandon Weeden, and Russell Wilson.

Only Wilson ? go figure, the only one who was a third-round pick ? has led his team to a winning record (4-2), but he has the best defense and plays in the league's most run-heavy offense. Part of what makes this group stand out historically is the way they have been relied upon so heavily and quickly in their careers.

When you look at all rookie quarterbacks since 1960 through their first six games, these five from 2012 are among the most prolific ever.

Rookie ranks since 1960 (games 1-6)

QuarterbackPass YardsRankPass TDRank
Andrew Luck*1,4883rd7T-2nd
Robert Griffin III1,3438th5T-17th
Ryan Tannehill1,4544th4T-35th
Brandon Weeden1,5192nd7T-2nd
Russell Wilson1,10813th81st

*Luck had a bye week and has only played in five games.

While Cam Newton had a record 1,847 passing yards at this point last season, there are three 2012 rookies who rank 2-4. Wilson may lack the yards, but he is the only rookie quarterback since 1960 with eight touchdown passes through six games.

Each rookie is managing a very different situation this season, and some have enjoyed more help than others so far.

Andrew Luck, Colts (2-3)
The most impressive part about Luck is his ability to take everything the coaches give him and effectively run the offense like a veteran. It is easy to see why he was such a highly-respected prospect out of Stanford.

Luck has been excellent in two-minute drills and running the hurry-up offense. The Colts ran a team-record 89 offensive snaps in their 30-27 comeback win from a 21-3 deficit against Green Bay.

He is very effective out of the shotgun, has been incredible at avoiding sacks and scrambling for first downs on key third downs, and had a three-game stretch where he led the team to a go-ahead score in the final 60 seconds of each game.

Luck has already thrown for over 300 yards in three of the five games; one more would tie Peyton Manning?s rookie record. He had 280 yards at the Jets in Week 6, though it was his worst game of the season.

The Colts run a lot of vertical routes and the running backs have just nine catches on the season. Luck is getting almost no yards after the catch from his receivers, as everything has been tightly contested and tackles are being made right as the Colts catch passes. Reggie Wayne has been a huge help and he is having a great season for Luck, but the young receivers are struggling to get open.

Concerns going forward are that the coaches ? that being interim coach Bruce Arians as Chuck Pagano battles leukemia ? may be putting too much responsibility on Luck. He is on pace for 803 drop backs this season, which would easily be a NFL record.

Some more screens, more play action (easier plays) could help Luck, as right now the running game has not been great and the offense is too fixated on wide receivers.

Playing with such an inexperienced team, the two road games have been the toughest (at Chicago and the Jets), and Luck has been pressing in each after getting behind early. Compared to the other rookies, Luck has faced the toughest set of defenses.

There will of course continue to be growing pains, but the future looks bright in Indianapolis.

Robert Griffin III, Redskins (3-3)
The quarterback known as RGIII is off to a hot start in what could be a historic season. It began with that big performance in New Orleans to start the season: 19-of-26 for 320 yards, 2 TD, 0 INT, and a 139.9 passer rating.

Of course the Saints look like hot garbage on defense this season, but it was one of the all-time debut games. Griffin has only been intercepted twice on 161 pass attempts this season. He may only have five passing touchdowns, but has already rushed for six.

Cam Newton received a lot of buzz for his dual-threat ability last season, but so far Griffin has been a more efficient passer and even more effective runner.

Through just six games Griffin has rushed 55 times for 379 yards (6.89 yards per carry). Only Bobby Douglass (475 yards in 1972) and Michael Vick (441 yards in 2006) have had more yards rushing by a quarterback through six games.

While Griffin has the skills to set some rushing records, he also is taking aim at Ben Roethlisberger?s rookie passer records for passer rating (98.1) and completion percentage (66.4 percent). Griffin is completing 70.2 percent of his passes and has a 100.5 passer rating.

Griffin had a late game-winning drive against Tampa Bay that was very impressive.

Mike Shanahan is showing he could still coach quarterbacks when not stuck with someone else?s trash. The Redskins have really tailored an offense to take advantage of Griffin?s unique skill set, and he has been put in the best situation to succeed individually among the rookie quarterbacks.

Calling lots of screens and short passes allows Griffin to get the ball out quickly to playmakers and get in a rhythm. Check the difference in how each rookie quarterback is throwing passes behind the line of scrimmage and deep (21+ yards) and the amount of yards after catch (YAC) received.

QuarterbackYards Passes Behind LOS Pct. 20+ Pct. YAC Pct.
Brandon Weeden1,519 231 62 26.8% 26 11.3% 876
Robert Griffin III1,343 161 47 29.2% 12 7.5% 774
Ryan Tannehill1,454198 39 19.7% 18 9.1% 634
Andrew Luck1,488 221 32 14.5% 26 11.8% 511
Russell Wilson1,108 152 25 16.4% 22 14.5% 373

Luck and Wilson have aired it out more, while Weeden and Griffin have often thrown short. Tannehill is in between the two.

The big concern with Griffin is his running style, size and injuries. He already suffered one concussion and could not finish the game. Washington?s backup plan also being a rookie (fourth-round pick Kirk Cousins) makes it even more important he avoids such big hits. He is more Michael Vick than he is Newton, though Griffin is more developed as a passer than both at this point.

Ryan Tannehill, Dolphins (3-3)
When watching Hard Knocks on HBO, it did not seem Tannehill would have any weapons to throw to, but Brian Hartline has exploded with games of 111 and 253 yards this season.

The latter came in Arizona when Tannehill passed for 431 yards, which is one short of Newton?s rookie record set last year (432 yards).

It was a rough start for Tannehill to have to go to Houston in Week 1, and his three straight interceptions in the second quarter gave Miami no shot that day. Never mind that the Dolphins followed it up with a fumble and fourth straight giveaway. That was a 30-10 rout.

However, in the last four games we have seen a much better quarterback and a very competitive Miami team. Reggie Bush is running the ball well and Cameron Wake leads one of the better defenses in the AFC.

Tannehill has rarely been spectacular like some of the other rookies, but he has been solid and has a legitimate claim that he should have won his last four starts. Miami just had to make a game-winning field goal in overtime against the Jets, but Dan Carpenter missed. They had a 4th and 10 to stop Arizona, but Kevin Kolb converted for the touchdown.

Without those plays, Tannehill would be 4-1 with two comebacks and game-winning drives. Joe Philbin may only be a rookie coach, but he has an offensive background and has Tannehill and the Dolphins playing much better than expected at 3-3.

Brandon Weeden, Browns (1-5)
The Browns were the last team to register a win this season, but at least they ended their losing streak, and Weeden had his first comeback/game-winning drive on his 29th birthday.

It was easy to say Weeden stepped into the worst situation just because it is Cleveland, but he has good pieces on the offensive line and the team used premium draft picks on running back Trent Richardson and wide receiver Josh Gordon. Greg Little never makes any catch easy on himself, and Mohamed Massaquoi has continued to disappoint.

After that horrendous Week 1 debut versus Philadelphia (12-of-35 for 118 yards, 0 TD, 4 INT, 5.1 passer rating), it was not clear Weeden really belonged in this league, but there has been improvement ever since. His unusual age means he must develop faster than some of these other guys, but he is also not the same investment when being just the No. 22 pick.

Not to write Weeden off yet, but he seems much more system dependent than the rest of the rookies, and Pat Shurmur?s coaching staff (Brad Childress as offensive coordinator) may not be the long-term answer. Improvising on the fly, throwing under pressure, touch-passing, in all of these areas Weeden appears to be lagging behind in the 2012 class.

Russell Wilson, Seahawks (4-2)
While Weeden?s stock may have fallen because of his age, Wilson?s discrimination was more due to his height (5-11).

But such an interesting prospect because of his strong arm and athletic ability, the Seahawks only had to invest the 75th pick in the third round of the draft to give him a shot.

After such an impressive preseason, Wilson beat out Matt Flynn for the starting job and has lived up to the billing in the real games. His early career may be known best for Hail Mary passes ? losing on two of them in college at Wisconsin and winning against Green Bay on the Golden Tate play ? but a few more games like Sunday versus New England and those moments will be forgotten.

Wilson became the fourth rookie to take out the Bill Belichick-coached Patriots as he completed 16-of-27 passes for 293 yards, 3 TD, 0 INT and a 133.7 passer rating. Russell outplayed Tom Brady in the fourth quarter, throwing a 46-yard game-winning touchdown to Sidney Rice with 1:18 remaining in a 13-point comeback win.

Russell has had a chance late in four games this season, and converted twice in big fashion versus flagship teams like the Patriots and Packers. He will get another crack in prime time this Thursday in San Francisco in a battle for first place in the NFC West.

Though limited in his attempts, Wilson does already have eight touchdown passes and may be the best deep-ball passer in the 2012 class. Wilson is 10-of-22 on passes thrown more than 21 yards this season, and has five touchdowns.

Should Seattle start to open up the offense and give him more chances, Wilson could be a dark horse as the lone rookie quarterback to lead his team into the postseason this year.

Not bad for the little guy out of the third round.

Eight Inexpensive Customized Gift Ideas

Finding the perfect gift for a special occasion can be very challenging. There always seems to be that one person who already has everything. Giving a customized gift ensures that the recipient will be getting an original, one of a kind present that has been well thought out. These ideas for personalized gifts are a thoughtful way to show affection and without spending a fortune.

For the person with a sweet tooth nothing could be better than customized candy. Many candy companies offer sections on their web pages that allow complete personalization of popular candy brands with photos or monograms. The images can be stamped directly on the sweets or the wrappers can be personalized in any way imaginable. The cost of customized candy is only slightly more than the plain version.

An item that is personalized with a special photo is a great way to give a memorable gift without spending too much money. Mugs, t-shirts, and calendars are all useful items that can be a unique gift when a photograph is added. Some companies offer a service that changes a picture into a high quality canvas that looks like a work of art.

Everyday items can be instantly personalized by adding a monogram. Putting initials on an article of clothing or an everyday object instantly makes it special and more fun to use. Ordinary items like umbrellas, bathrobes, pajamas, flash drives and journals can be easily and affordably monogrammed. Engraving or embroidering a gift with a person?s name makes it an instant keepsake.

For those really short on funds, a scrapbook is a nearly free way to let a person know how much they are special. Free online programs allow photos to be uploaded and placed into customizable templates that make a professional looking scrapbook. This is a heartfelt gift that can be enjoyed for years.

Nothing makes a sweeter Christmas gift than a customized ornament. Many companies produce completely personalized ornaments at a very budget friendly price. Creating a personalized ornament from scratch is even less expensive, and nothing is quite so heartwarming as a handmade Christmas gift.

As more people are trying to reduce their carbon footprint, reusable grocery bags are becoming increasingly popular. Giving the gift of green gives friends a reason to smile as they shop. Adding a cherished quote or a work of art from a favorite artist can perfectly customize reusable grocery bags. This is an extraordinary gift that will be loved and used all the time.

Garden stones are the perfect present for those with yards. This is a gift that is a fun do it yourself project. Stones can be imprinted with children?s handprints, names or favorite animals and flowers. All the materials needed are a mold and some mixable concrete. Home improvement stores sell kits that produce unique stones with different shapes and colors.

Gift baskets are the perfect customized gift to give. Everyone loves getting a basket full of his or her favorite goodies. It?s so easy to fill a basket with the best treats and trinkets that fit a friend?s personality. This is a project that is easy to do yourself and you can spend as much or as little money as you wish. Your imagination and the tastes of the gift receiver are the limit.

David Sheath is greatly experienced in the photo gifts industry. If you need to design a customized gift his store can certainly help. His website Photo Gifts Mall offers more than 400 fully customizable products that can be easily personalized with your own photos, logos, designs and text.

Highlighted Guild

  • Transcendence ? Galactic Republic

There are many playstyles that make-up gamers, so it only stands to reason there are several types of guilds ranging from casual to hardcore. While some guilds completely roleplay in character there are others just out to have a party like time. There are guilds into PVE endgame progression and those who are fully focused on PVP. Not to mention the many who blur the lines between the many types of guilds. This week?s guild, Transcendence, leans to the full-tilt PVP side of SWTOR. We will find out their beginnings, why they favor PVP and also learn how they are doing as they attempt to venture into Operations.

War Hero armor ready? Time to meet Transcendence after the Jump?

?

?

?

?

?

How did your guild get started?

We started with a coin flip in my apartment.? One of my best friends, Neil, suggested we use the name ?Epiphany,? while I preferred Transcendence.?? With that, we decided to start our guild, with our own vision and mission.? Regardless of the name, the mission was the same; enjoy online games with a Player vs. Player (PVP) focus.

?

Is SWTOR the first game for your guild?

Yes, though we are open for expanding to multiple games and genres.?? Whether it?s a first person shoot, a RPG, MMO, whatever, the message and meaning of our guild is still the same.

?

What was the motivation to start your own guild?

We were tired of joining guilds just to start working our way out the social ladder.? Typically, we?d join a guild, no one talk to us, give us resources, reach out to see if we need anything.? Moreover, people expected you to know the game in and out and were unwilling to help others in their guild until they?d ?proven? themselves.

We set to change this, focusing on a specific goal (top 10 PvP guild), reaching out to our members, whether level 1 or 50, gathering resources, and knowledge to further our goal.

?

?

?

Do you think some ?elitist? attitudes can hurt a gaming community?

Yes it can.? Some people have many hours, spreadsheets, and data to observe and manipulate the game.? They stop at nothing to be the best (much like real life).? As long as they aren?t destructive or negative to other parts of the community, I don?t think they?re bad.

But this is real life and most of those groups/guilds flame other people for not being or desiring to be at the top.? That?s where we step in.? We want to have some elite players that want nothing more than to be number one, but never do we want to sacrifice our relationships, environment and play style to get there.? That?s where our officers and members help guide each other to make sure we are congruent in this philosophy.

?

?

How does Transcendence differ in the gaming environment found in your guild?

We offer resources, guidance, with little to no expectations.? Everyone can fit in with this guild.? If you want to be an elite PvP player, sign up for Saturday night ranked warzones.? If someone wants to start a PvE operations team, we allow for creative innovation.

?

What server and type of server can Transcendence be found?

We are only on the Prophecy of the Five.? Since we are a PvP guild, it makes sense to stick to one server and focus our strength and resources on one server.

?

What made the guild decide on this type of server and faction?

We tired Empire and hated it.? While there are great guilds, players, and so forth, it seemed players embodied the Imperial personality.? The Empire (Sith) were all about gaining power with no recourse for others.? Sometimes people embody this philosophy even though it is a game.

With that being said, we have aligned ourselves with a great non-elitist Empire guild, Apollyon (http://www.apollyon.us).? Since story is such an important part of this game, we wanted a safe and friendly place for our alts and vice versa.? Therefore, we aligned with a great Empire guild.? We are gearing up for future events, open world PvP?ing against each other, ranked warzone groups, etc. We also have an Alliance with HVND, a fellow Republic guild. Below is a pic featuring some members from the guild HVND.

?

?

?

Your guild is very focused on PVP. How does Transcendence help guild members become better PVP gamers?

Friday nights (and any other really) is specifically set aside for ?gearing up.?? We required 1,200 expertise (the PvP stat) or full Battle Master gear to compete in our Saturday night group.? However, Friday is set aside so we can help mentor people to get gear, but also understand our guild strategies per map.? It?s been very successful at getting people?s gear/strategy prepared for the more competitive Saturday night ranked events.

?

?

What PVP goals does the guild have?

One, to be a top 10 PvP guild based on the current ranking system.? While there?s limited data in the preseason, we are gauging this on our individual ranking (rated stat).? Most people know the top 10 or so PvP guilds on our server, and there?s a lot of competition.

?

?

Since Transcendence is into PVP, what are some areas the guild feels needs addressed in SWTOR?

We really want open world PvP.? While there?s Illum, there?s really limited incentive to go there.? We are trying to make player based content by doing siege the castle on Quesh or 2v2 tournaments at the Outlaws Den.? We still need some type of incentive other than valor.

?

?

What things are they doing right?

The polishing they put on their content.? While there are bugs, a lot of bugs, I feel the overall game quality when something is released is great.? There are some games that I?ve played where nothing works right, customer service never responds, and there?s nothing you can do about it.? At least Bioware makes a good attempt at getting things right the first time (my opinion of course).

?

?

How have the new changes in Patch 1.4 impacted the PVP?

1.4 drastically changed resolve or ?stun locks.?? I feel it?s much better for skilled players because you can time stuns in order to lock down specific players such as a healer or a super DPS character.? People are frustrated with the system, yet these are the same players without a guild, voice communication, or a basic understanding of the resolve system.

?

?

Even though the guild is focused PVP, does the guild also take part in Operations?

We are starting too.? We?ve yet to do Operations on an eight man guild scale, but we?ve done them together a few times.? Starting about two weeks ago, we started running PvE content on Wednesday nights.
?

?

How has the guild done in SWTOR Operations?

Good so far considering we are mostly in PvP gear.? Thankfully the game has a story mode which one doesn?t need to be max gear in order to experience the content.? In fact, most of the PvP gear is sufficient to run normal operations.? As we progress, gear will continue to be a necessity not an option.
?

?

Has the guild had a chance to go through Terror From Beyond yet?

No, but I can?t wait to get there.? I?ve been extremely impressed on the quality and structure of operations and image this will be impressive to undertake.

?

?

?

What is your main character?s class/advance class?

My main character is Del?tia, Republic, level 50, Jedi Consular Shadow.? I absolutely love this class because of its versatility.? You?re not stuck doing one thing like my War Hero Sentinel.? You can control the battlefield and change the game.? Plus, I really enjoyed the story.

?

?

What are a couple PVP tips you can share with our readers?

First, enable the resolve bar in your user interface.? This is the most important part of PvP.? Second, model your playstyle after the best players.? If you see someone in the same class out preforming you ask them questions.? Ask experienced and geared guildies how they fair, about specs, gear, etc.? Knowledge is power and gaining more and more will only help you.? Third, take your time.

There?s a steep PvP tax when you hit 50, get destroyed over and over for about two weeks until you have a full battle master set.? Lastly, understand the game before you hit 50.? If you?re 40 valor or higher, you can store 3,500 ranked warzone commendations and 2,000 unranked.? When you hit 50, you?ll be able to buy some major upgrades before? you run one warzone and this will help you?re frustration factor.

?

?

What would you say is one of the biggest aspect overlooked, for a player at being more effective in PVP?

Keybinds is a good start.? People stick to the standard 1-0, space bar jump, etc.? I completely redesigned my keybinds which directly affects my effectiveness.?? For instance, space bar is target nearest player.? I rarely need to jump, but I always need to switch targets, why not have this as the number one most hit key?? Keybinds separate winners and losers in my opinion.? It takes a lot of effort to hit 9 verses Q for a major damage/healing ability.

?

?

?

I noticed in your forums, your guild is having a contest in October. Can you tell us about the contest and what sorts of prizes are involved?

We are trying to stimulate our website activity.? We are asking players to have five post within one month to be entered into a random drawing.? First place is a 60-day time card, second place is a physical security key, and third is 100,000 in-game credits.? Knowledge is power, we want to spread this message and have some fun while at it.

?

?

?

Is Transcendence currently recruiting new members?

Yes, we are always looking for friendly, mature, and PvP focused players.? We are currently recruiting all levels and all classes.? However, we are not recruiting for recruiting sake.? Just expanding ones roster does nothing for the overall mission if those players aren?t focused on the end goal.? Therefore, if people are interested in ranked PvP end-game, we welcome applications via our website.

?

?Why did you join Transcendence? What is one thing that you enjoy about being a part of this guild?

?I joined for a few reasons. 1. I love having a good group of people to pve/pvp with 2. Being able to communicate with a group makes the game more fun plus you win more. The thing I enjoy the most is the chance to share my experiences, and grow with a group of guys and gals that enjoy this game as much as I do. ? GrafAvenger

?

What is the best way for players to contact you or your officers?

In-game or email is probably the best two ways to reach us.? I give my email out, Jacob.hausman@gmail.comor PST us in game, Del?tia, Bioshock, or Azkren.? We are always in the Republic fleet, just show Transcendence and someone will help you (unless 2 AM or something). You also can contact us through the following social media outlets or our website:

Transcendence website

Transcendence Facebook page

Transcendence Google+ page

?

Does the guild welcome players to group up for Warzones etc. if they would like to see how the guild operates?

This is core to our mission.? When I log on to play, I immediately see who?s online (regardless of gear, rank, valor) and ask if they want to group or any groups already in action.? Reaching out to our members is the most important part of our growth.

?

?

I want to give a huge shout out to Del?tia for his help responding to all my emails. He and his officers really did a great job making this article possible, especially since I was gone on vacation this past weekend. I urge anyone that loves PVP or just enjoys having a good time head over to Prophecy of the Five server and get in touch with this guild!

Does your guild have a specific focus when playing SWTOR or maybe something that sets your guild apart from the rest? Hardcore or Casual, PVP or PVE or RP let us all hear about your guild! So if you are in a guild or a leader in a guild, why not contact me and see if we can tell the community about what you folks are doing. Just submit your guild?s website and some basic information in an email to me at, jason@corellianrun.com. Look forward to highlighting more guilds here at Corellian Run Radio. Thanks and see you next week!
